The article chronicles the life of artist Edvard Munch and the importance of his work to the art world. The article presents Munch’s life story, from early childhood till his death in 1944, as well as exploring the factors that influenced his paintings and his different artistic development. Lubow examines the meaning of different paintings and how the reflect the artist’s frame of mind using both the artist’s own commentary and interviews with respected art critics. The article would be more appropriate for junior high or high school students rather than elementary and would be best suited for use in understanding artist’s perspectives.
